Guérande, a city of art and history
Guérande is a medieval and Celtic town, and has been awarded the “Ville d’art et d’histoire” label for its impressive heritage. The first traces of occupation date back to the Neolithic period. The city began trading salt and wine in the late Middle Ages. Today, however, the town’s main source of income is tourism, thanks to its remarkable and much-appreciated medieval remains.
Indeed, if you enter the heart of the town, you’ll discover the medieval city and its 14th-century ramparts. The walls also feature four gates, located at the four cardinal points: Porte Saint-Michel (east), Bizienne (west), Vannetaise (north) and Saillé (south). A fifth opening was made in the mid-19th century: the poterne du Tricot. There’s also thecollegiate church of Saint-Aubin, listed as a “Monument Historique”, with its complex architecture blending Romanesque and Gothic styles. The Notre-Dame-la-Blanche chapel, built in the 13th century, is the oldest building in the town.

Guérande’s illuminations
To highlight its heritage, the town of Guérande is decked out in lights as soon as night falls. These are the ” Guérande by Light” illuminations. The town has devised a “lighting plan” to highlight buildings such as the Collégiale Saint-Aubin and the medieval town, as well as parks and gardens and the moat. You’ll find a light trail to help you admire all this heritage. “Guérande by Light” is part of a sustainable development approach, with low-energy lighting that blends discreetly into the environment. What’s more, for the major events of the year, different colors illuminate the heritage: yellow-orange for the Fête de la Musique, blue/white/red for the Fête Nationale and blue/cyan with snowflakes and stars for Christmas.
